Sculpture can take many forms and be made from lots of different media. "Three Sisters" is clay with a salt glaze. "The Portable Desk For the Woman Trying to Make It In a Man's World" came about when I kept losing my office space to men in my department who thought they should have a bigger/airier/more convenient office that looked just like mine. This piece folds up into a briefcase.

I wanted to talk about media pressure on women to buy beauty products. "Give Me a Minute To Pull Myself Together" consists of a white bathroom cabinet holds three or four products on the side marked "his"; a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a safety razor. On the right side labeled "hers" a plethora of products are falling out of the door and onto the base. More items are stacked on top. Is it that we expect more of ourselves or that society has produced a need in us to redesign ourselves into a Frankenstein creature totally unlike the original model?

I have always been horrified at the idea of a creature who comes into children's bedrooms at night and steals body parts. What if there was no tooth under the pillow? Would she extract the ones she wants or just take some other piece of you?

Women rarely think of themselves as whole beings. We have a tendency to disassemble ourselves. Part of that comes from the images we see on television or in magazines where we are represented as breasts or legs or butts. It's difficult to see yourself as a total package when you are constantly presented as a commodity or a sexualized component. "Woman Disassembled" is a ceramic marionette that was the window piece for the self-titled show.

Part of that show were these lovely little pins. In our language we have many harsh and degrading words to describe women's genitalia. In the east this mystical body part is refered to as yoni. It's a beautiful word for a special part of us. We are like unfolding flowers and that is what is represented by these beautiful little pins.
